Rockfall in Yosemite

At 7 p.m. on July 10, 1996, a large chunk of rock fell from the cliff beneath Washburn Point, the debris landing in the Happy Isles area. The rockfall triggered an enormous gust of wind that uprooted trees and covered the area with a grey granite dust, literally turning the area from color to black-and-white. One person was killed. Happy Isles was closed until the Spring of 1997.
