From the
Yosemite Daily Report, March 1, 2002
The numbers below reflect a third year of decline in total reported bear incidents from 654 to 230 (a 65% decrease) and a decline in total reported damage from $126,192 to $32,303 (a 74% decrease) compared to 2000.
Since 1998, the year prior to increased funding for the human-bear management program, the number of reported bear incidents has decreased by 85%, and the amount of damage has decreased by 95%.
The addition of aversive conditioning to the bear management program is also credited for remarkable behavior changes in bears.
