This beautiful picture book features a classic Yosemite legend retold by Robert D. San Souci and illustrated by Daniel San Souci, a brother combination renowned in the world of children's literature. The book was named 'Children's Book of the Year' by the Northern California Independent Booksellers, and was a finalist for a Small Press Book Award. All the animal people of the village search vainly for the missing bears, until Red-tailed Hawk has located them high atop a huge granite rock on the valley's rim. Hoping to rescue the cubs, each of the animals in turn tries to scale the vertical wall, but each fails. The fate of the young bears rests with tiny Measuring Worm, who is the last to attempt to climb the hulking rock. In this story about the value of all beings, the nature of courage, and other themes, masterfully retold by Robert D. San Souci and wonderfully illustrated by Daniel San Souci, young readers will discover how the bear cubs are saved, learn the traditional Miwok tale of how a rock grew to become one of Yosemite's most famous landmarks, and come to realize that being a hero has very little to do with one's size. Includes notes about the Miwok, related reading, and Internet resources for teachers.
